Men’s Basketball Connects on Game-Winning Shot as Time Expires to Defeat FIU, 68-66

MIAMI – Sophomore Macon Emory converted a last-second tip in as time expired to lift the University of Delaware men's basketball team to a 68-66 win at FIU Thursday night. The Fightin' Blue Hens advance to 8-16 overall and 4-9 in CUSA action, while the Panthers drop to 11-13, 4-8 CUSA.

Emory's shot marks the first time a Hen has hit a game winner with less than a second remaining since Kevin Anderson made a layup with 0.3 on the clock to defeat Hofstra on January 23, 2020.

HEN HIGHLIGHTS

Delaware out shot FIU 46.3 percent to 38.8 percent.
UD also held the rebounding advantage 38-34.
Justyn Fernandez recorded his third-consecutive 20-plus-point outing with 21 points. He also corralled a career-best nine rebounds.
Christian Bliss recorded 17 points, six rebounds, and five assists.
Tyler Houser notched 17 points and seven boards.
Emory rounded out the double-figure cohort with 10 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED

With Delaware up 5-2 to start the game, FIU ripped off an 11-0 run to hold a 13-5 lead. UD responded with a 12-3 advantage over the next 5:39 to take a 17-16 score at the under-eight media break. The remainder of the half featured 11 lead changes with the hosts holding the 30-29 margin.
A 12-8 scoring differential in favor of the Blue & Gold put UD up 41-38 at the first media break of the second stanza. The Hens widened the gap holding the Panthers scoreless for 4:23. Over that span, Delaware built a 56-43 lead for its largest of the game to that point. FIU answered with a 12-4 run before a UD timeout with 1:56 left and a 64-58 score. The hosts would tie the game with five seconds remaining. Emory tipped in the game winner as time expired.
