McCurry’s Hat Trick Lifts Men’s Lacrosse to 12-11 Victory Over St. John’s

QUEENS, N.Y. – John McCurry tallied his first-hat trick of the season as the University of Delaware men's lacrosse team defeated St. John's, 12-11, on Saturday. The Fightin' Blue Hens improved to 1-2, while the Red Storm fell to 0-2.

HENS HIGHLIGHTS
- Delaware won the battle at the X, winning 18-of-27 faceoffs in the contest. Freshman Scott Conte led the way, winning a career-best 17 faceoffs.
- UD scored eight goals in the first frame, the most in a quarter for the Hens this season.
- McCurry's three goals marked his ninth-career hat trick. He added an assist for a season-high four points.
- Bennett Parmer had a goal and three assists to tie McCurry for a team-best four points.
- Finn Morgan scored his first-two goals of the season, both coming in the fourth quarter.
- Keegan Lathrop scored his first-career goal. The sophomore tallied again in the contest for two goals on three shot attempts.
- Matt Triolo recorded the first-two points of his career, scoring his first-career goal and notching his first-career assist.
- Drew Duncan assisted on two goals, the first-two helpers in his career.
- Cory Capri, Jason Kolar, and Tyler Owings each added a goal in the contest.
- Brendan Powers tallied his first assist of the season.
- Aidan Koff recorded his first-career win in cage, making a career-best 13 saves.
- Nick Cowen corralled six ground balls, tying a career high, while causing two turnovers to lead the team in both categories.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Delaware offense erupted in the first frame with an 8-3 advantage, including six-unanswered goals to end the period.
- The Johnnies closed the gap to 8-6 at halftime, holding UD off the board in the second quarter.
- The Blue & Gold struck first in the third on McCurry's third goal of the day before the Red Storm scored the next two to even the game at nine. Each team would score one more goal in the frame to leave a 10-10 tie with 15 minutes left in regulation.
- Morgan went back-to-back to open the scoring in the fourth quarter giving the Hens a 12-10 advantage with 10:18 remaining in the fourth. St. John's got one back with 4:22 left, leaving a one-goal game. UD's defense held strong for the final minutes to seal the victory.
GAME NOTES
- Delaware improves to 26-9 under Ben DeLuca in the month of February.
- Matt Montgomery made his return after missing all of last season due to injury. The 2024 All-CAA Second Team selection went 651 days between games for the Hens.
- Lathrop made his first-career start, while Ben Maynor appeared in his first-collegiate game.
