Scheivert, Shaffer Lead Softball Past Stonehill in Season-Opening Win

BOCA RATON, Fla. - University of Delaware softball opened the 2026 season with an 11-3 win over Stonehill on Feb. 6, 2026 to begin play at the FAU Paradise Classic. Katie Scheivert became the eighth player in program history to score at least 100 runs scored and tied a program record for most runs scored in a game with four.
HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- Sydney Shaffer picked up right where she left off after winning CAA Player of the Year in 2025 as she went 3-for-4 with two home runs, five RBIs, four runs scored, a walk, and a stolen base.Â
- Scheivert reached base in all five plate appearances finishing 4-for-4 with two doubles, four runs scored, a walk, and two stolen bases.Â
- Sorella Gallucci and Maddie Diamond each went 1-for-3. Gallucci drew two walks and Diamond added a walk and an RBI.Â
- Morgan Chambers went 2-for-2 off the bench.Â
- Marlayna Capaldi went 1-for-2 with a run scored, an RBI, and two walks.Â
- Three Delaware pitchers combined to allow zero earned runs and just one walk with seven strikeouts. Karli Challburg earned the start and went three innings with two strikeouts. Kylie Wilkerson earned the win in her debut after throwing three innings with two strikeouts. Josie Crossman got the final three outs with three strikeouts.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Delaware drew five walks in the first inning on its way to two runs. Scheivert, Shaffer, and Gallucci all walked to start the game before Diamond brought home the season's first run on a sacrifice fly. After Mulligan walked to reload the bases, Capaldi drew a free pass to score Shaffer.Â
- With runners on second and third and no outs, Challburg had consecutive strikeouts before allowing two unearned runs to score to even the game at two.
- Challburg then followed with a perfect second inning and stranded a runner at second base in the third inning.Â
- The Blue Hens took the lead for good in the fourth inning after Shaffer launched a two-run home run to put Delaware up 4-2.Â
- Wilkerson entered in relief and pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout.Â
- UD tacked on four runs in the fifth inning to take an 8-2 lead. Gianna Costaro brought a run home on a ground ball, Scheivert doubled in a run, then Shaffer hit her second home run of the game.Â
- Delaware put the game out of reach with a three-run seventh inning. Allie Nankivell walked, stole second, and scored on Scheivert's RBI single. Scheivert then scored on an RBI single by Shaffer before she scored the game's final run.Â
- Crossman came in for the seventh inning and had three strikeouts to seal the win.
GAME NOTES
- Scheivert became the eighth player in program history to reach 100 career runs scored, joining Hanna Garber (161), Leanna Gearhart (157), Jessica Grisler (135), Brittney Mendoza (126), Mandy Welch (119), Chloe Blantz (105), and Katie Lee (105).Â
- Scheivert tied a program record for runs scored in a game with four, and became the second player (Jessica Grisler) in program history to have two games with four runs scored in a career.Â
- Scheivert tied a career-high with four hits, also done on May 1, 2025 against Towson.Â
- Shaffer hit her 26th career home run, moving her into sole possession of third place in program history. She only trails Anna Steinmetz (44) and Mariah Kondravy (34) on the Delaware career leaderboard.Â
- Shaffer's multi-home run game was the fourth of her career, also done last season on March 18 against Hofstra, March 26 against Maryland, and April 25 against Monmouth.Â
- Diamond and Chambers each recorded their first career hits.Â
- Delaware's 11 runs scored were its most in a season-opening game since defeating UMass 18-0 in 2021.Â
TICKETS
Softball season ticket deposits are available now. Season ticket packages and individual game tickets will go on sale later this winter.
Individual ticket prices will be $10 per game and $5 for youth (ages 3-12). Season ticket packages will be available at 50 percent off the single game rate. There will also be group rate, incentives, and additional gameday experience opportunities. All seating will be general admission at Delaware Softball Diamond.
UD students will continue to receive free tickets to all home softball games.
