Softball's Seventh Inning Comeback Caps Off Doubleheader Sweep of Saint Joseph's

NEWARK, Del. -Â University of Delaware softball swept a doubleheader from Saint Joseph's on Sunday, Feb. 15, to cap off a 3-2 home-opening weekend. UD won 11-3 in six innings in game one before using a three-run bottom of the seventh to come from behind for a walk-off victory in game two.

TICKETS
Softball season ticket deposits are available now. Season ticket packages and individual game tickets will go on sale later this winter.
Individual ticket prices will be $10 per game and $5 for youth (ages 3-12). Season ticket packages will be available at 50 percent off the single game rate. There will also be group rate, incentives, and additional gameday experience opportunities. All seating will be general admission at Delaware Softball Diamond.
UD students will continue to receive free tickets to all home softball games.

HEN HIGHLIGHTS, GAME ONE
- Sydney Shaffer went 2-for-2 with a two-run home run, walked twice, and scored two runs.
- Maddie Diamond hit a three-run home run and drove in four runs while scoring twice.
- Sorella Gallucci went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
- Bridget Chapman went 2-for-3 with a run scored and RBI.
- Allie Nankivell recorded two hits, stole two bases, and scored a run..
- Katie Scheivert scored a pair of runs and walked two times.
- Claire Woods pitched five innings, allowing two earned runs while striking out five.Â
- Shaffer went 1-for-2 with the walk-off RBI and two walks.
- Chapman finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.Â
- Ryleigh Thomas was 2-for-4.Â
- Gianna Costaro went 1-for-3.Â
- Nankivell went 2-for-3 with a stolen base.Â
- Josie Crossman earned the win in relief, tossing five shutout innings while allowing just one hit and one walk and striking out six. Â
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME ONE
- Woods stranded a runner at second in the first inning and recorded a strikeout.
- Delaware jumped out early as Scheivert worked a leadoff walk and Shaffer crushed a two-run opposite-field home run. Costaro followed with a squeeze bunt to score Gallucci, giving UD a 3–0 lead.
- Woods stranded two more runners in the second inning.
- UD added to its lead in the bottom half as Scheivert and Shaffer walked before Diamond launched a three-run homer. Chapman later singled home Gallucci to make it 7–0.
- Saint Joseph's scored one run in each of the third, fourth, and fifth innings to cut the deficit to 7–3.
- Delaware answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Nankivell scored on a fielder's choice, and Gallucci drove in two runs with a bunt.
- Kylie Wilkerson pitched a 1-2-3 sixth inning, and Jamie Chander capped the scoring with a pinch-hit double to score Chapman, sealing the 11–3 run-rule victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME TWO
- Wilkerson got the start and stranded the bases loaded in the first inning.Â
- Saint Joseph's scored three runs with two outs in the second
- Crossman entered in relief in the third inning and retired the first nine batters she faced, recording multiple strikeouts in the third and fourth.
- Chapman started the Delaware rally in the bottom of the seventh inning with a single up the middle with one out. Thomas doubled and Costaro was hit by a pitch. With two outs, Chandler and Scheivert reached on an infield singles to tie the game. Shaffer singled to right to score Caylin Blazys to give UD the walk-off win.Â
GAME NOTES
- Delaware now has two walk-off wins already this season after having three in 2024 and 2025. The first came on Feb. 14 on Chapman's RBI single against Georgetown.Â
- Delaware's run-rule victory in game one was the 47th under head coach Jen Steele and first in 2026.Â
- Shaffer's home run was the 28th of her career, one shy of tying Brooke Glanden for third all-time in program history.Â
- Shaffer is also up to 88 career walks, one shy of Mandy Welch for second most all-time and five shy of tying Hanna Garber for the program record.Â
- Woods earned her first career win as aat Delaware during game one and first since March 20, 2024 against Austin Peay when she was a member of Middle Tennessee.Â
- Diamond's four RBIs in game one were a career high.Â
- Gallucci's three hits in game one were a season-high and tied a career-high done three times last season.Â
- Chapman is one a career-best five-game hit streak that includes three multi-hit games. She is hitting .444 (8-for-18) during the streak.Â
- Nankivell is hitting .450 (9-for-20) over her last seven games and has three multi-hit games during the stretch and a hit in six of the games.Â
